Honouring Kaitlyn: First Annual Scholarship Awarded in Her Memory
This year will mark the first annual Kaitlyn Marie Reimer scholarship. Kaitlyn founded Katie Cares after she was diagnosed with cancer. Her dream and vision were always to give back to her community. Kaitlyn loved going to school, reading, and writing were just a few things she enjoyed while attending school. I am quite confident in saying that Kaitlyn would have pursued university or post-secondary education. This year is a milestone as it is 10 years since Kaitlyn passed away.
Kerry and Darlene Pollock approached our family with their idea to honour Kaitlyn, by donating and creating the scholarship fund. We are truly honoured by your generosity and want to say thank you. Thank you to the Winkler Community Foundation for helping to facilitate this fund. Many thanks to Garden Valley Collegiate for accepting the request to add another scholarship to their list. The fund will be open to Garden Valley Collegiate students the students must write a 500-word essay entitled “How I will make a difference”. I think the line that sums it up for me from the winning essay is as follows quote, I see myself making a difference as a nurse by comforting the children and trying to make their hospital stay a little less stressful, whether it’s sitting with them and holding their hand or by telling them a joke and making them smile.
This year’s recipient sent in an essay that paralleled Kaitlyn’s experience in the hospital. Her essay resonated with those choosing the recipient. We chose Kristin Buhler as the first recipient. Kristin plans on furthering her education by pursuing a career in nursing. Kristin will be receiving a $2,000 scholarship to help achieve her goals.
We wish you all the best Kristin as you look forward to your grade 12 graduation, and we wish you much success as you follow your dreams to make a difference for those around you.
After the presentation was made to Kristin guests enjoyed baking that was done by the cottage staff. We could not have asked for better weather, for this special event. The guests also received tours of the cottage and enjoyed the beauty of the cottage grounds.
Thank you Kristin we wish you much success!
